Recovering from a drug or alcohol addiction is a long and hard journey. But, it’s one that you won’t regret. Still, people who have had problems with substance abuse, dependency, or addiction do tend to regret their choices. Life before recovery often plagues their memories and makes them feel guilty. But, when you choose to stop addiction in your life, you take a big step towards a fresh start. Recovery is your chance at beginning a new chapter.

How Do I Write a New Chapter After Beating Addiction?

Going through recovery means taking authorship. Your life is your story and this is how you write a new chapter for yourself. Addiction has a way of stealing your sense of control. But, now that you’ve begun traveling down the road to freedom, you are in the driver’s seat. Sometimes, though, it’s hard to know where to start.

The first thing you need to remember is that you’ve chosen the right path. You chose to take over your life. Let that sink in. Recovery was your choice! You should be proud of yourself for that!

What’s Next For Me After Beating Addiction and Treatment?

Although beating addiction is liberating, it can be tough. It’s not easy starting over. For some people, the whole process can be downright frightening. But, you’ve got this! You just need to figure out the right thing for you.

Moving is the best option for some people after beating addiction and going to treatment. That might mean moving out of your home. Maybe you have family members, roommates, or neighbors who have addiction problems. The most helpful thing for you to do is get away from those negative influences. Maybe, moving means changing cities or states. Perhaps a change of scenery will help you to feel brand new and give you a better chance at staying sober.

Learning how to say no can be really hard. This means turning down drug offers. If you’ve had an issue with alcohol abuse or dependency, the best thing for you to do is stay away from alcoholic beverages. This is a new chapter in your life and you need to decide how it’s going to go. Perhaps, this new chapter won’t include drinks at all. If that’s the case, you’ll have to start saying “no” to the things which once took over your life.

Avoid relapse at all costs! This goes closely with the choice to “no”. Work on discovering what triggers your cravings for drugs or alcohol. Yes, even after treatment, you might be tempted. But, just remember why you chose to find freedom. And, avoid returning to bondage!

Patience is a virtue! Don’t try to rush the process. Writing a new chapter in your life may take a while. Don’t expect to just bounce back to life after treatment. Be patient with yourself and relax! You’ll get to where you want to be when the time is right. Trust the process.

Shift your focus. You could concentrate on all the things you’ve done in the past. Or, you could focus on the things you’re capable of doing now that your past is over. Not sure about you, but that second option sounds like a good idea. Move past your past!
